Getting to Guatapé from the Airport

Which airport?

If you’re flying into Colombia to visit Guatapé, fly into José María Córdova (JMC/MDE) in Rionegro, Antioquia. This guide is for JMC.

If you’re coming from Bogotá (El Dorado/BOG), see the section below — it’s a separate journey entirely.

Your three options from JMC

Prices approximate as of July 2026. Verify locally on arrival.

Option 1: Via Marinilla (recommended)

This is the route locals take. It avoids Medellín entirely and works because JMC and Guatapé are both in Eastern Antioquia.

1. Exit arrivals at JMC. Take a taxi or Uber to Marinilla bus terminal. Roughly 20–30 minutes, COP 30,000–45,000. Agree on the price before you get in — airport taxis are metered or flat-rate; Uber is usually cheaper.
2. At Marinilla terminal, buy a ticket to El Peñol or Guatapé. Buses and minivans run regularly throughout the day. Travel time to Guatapé: approximately 45–60 minutes. Fare: COP 8,000–15,000 (verify at the counter).
3. You arrive at Guatapé terminal in the town center — walking distance to everything.

Important: Bus frequency from Marinilla drops in the early morning and late evening. If you land after 7pm, a private transfer is the safer option.

Option 2: Private transfer direct (easiest)

• Book a car to take you directly from JMC arrivals to Guatapé — door to door, no connections.
• Cost: COP 200,000–350,000 for a full car one way (shared options sometimes available, cheaper).
• Travel time: 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic and whether they take the Marinilla route or the Autopista.
• How to book: InDriver, Uber, or fixed-price transfer desks in the JMC arrivals hall. Your hotel in Medellín or Guatapé can also arrange this in advance.
• Worth it for: Families, groups of 3+, anyone with a lot of luggage, late-night arrivals, or travelers who just want to arrive without thinking.

Option 3: Via Terminal del Norte (avoid if possible)

This is what most travel blogs recommend and most visitors do by default. It’s not wrong — it’s just inefficient from JMC.

• Taxi or Uber from JMC to Terminal del Norte (Medellín): 45–75 minutes, COP 40,000–70,000.
• Bus from Terminal del Norte to Guatapé: ~2 hours, COP 15,000–18,000.
• Total: 3.5–4.5 hours and you’ve added a full trip into and back out of Medellín for no reason.
• This makes sense only if you’re also spending time in Medellín before or after Guatapé.

Guatapé to José María Córdova Airport (leaving)

The return trip is a separate problem from getting here, mainly because of flight timing. The route runs Guatapé to Marinilla to Rionegro to the airport, roughly 45 km.

• Private transfer or taxi (best for a flight): door to door in about 1¼ to 1½ hours. The only reliable choice for early-morning or late-night flights, when public transport thins out. Arrange it the day before.
• Public bus via Rionegro (cheapest): buses run through the day from Guatapé toward Marinilla and Rionegro; from Rionegro town it is a short taxi or local-bus hop to the airport terminal, roughly 2 to 2½ hours end to end. Operators and timetables change, so confirm the current departures locally before you rely on a specific one for a flight.

Buffer: leave Guatapé at least 2½ to 3 hours before international check-in if going public, about 2 hours by private transfer, and add margin on Sundays and holidays. With luggage, a private transfer is worth it.

Using an official airport taxi

If you take a taxi at José María Córdova, use the white airport taxis from the official taxi stand outside the terminal, rather than anyone offering a ride at the arrivals doors. The airport drivers’ association runs these (their cars carry a blue stripe), and fares are fixed and posted on a sign at the airport rather than metered, so you can check the price before you get in and the highway toll is included. A legitimate budget alternative is the Metro-run airport bus. Whichever you pick, agreeing the fare up front avoids the occasional inflated quote.

Coming from Bogotá (El Dorado airport)

Bogotá is not on the way to Guatapé. Your options from BOG:

• Fly to JMC (recommended): Cheap domestic flights on Avianca, LATAM, Wingo. Then follow the guide above. Total travel time: 1 hour flight + 1.5–2 hours to Guatapé.
• Bus from Bogotá: ~9 hours on the Medellín road. Buses leave Terminal del Sur (Bogotá) and arrive at Terminal del Norte (Medellín). From there, connect to Guatapé. Overnight buses are available — budget and reasonable for backpackers, but a full day.
• Direct Bogotá–Guatapé: No direct service. All routes go through Medellín or Rionegro.

Practical notes

• Luggage: The Marinilla bus route works fine with a backpack or carry-on. For large bags or 2+ suitcases, a private transfer is easier.
• Timing: Arrive at JMC by mid-morning and you can be in Guatapé by early afternoon with time to spare. Arriving after 5pm, book a transfer — bus connections at Marinilla become unreliable late in the day.
• Return trip: For flights out of JMC, the reverse Marinilla route works well. Give yourself extra time on Sundays when the return road from Guatapé is busy. Last bus from Guatapé terminal runs approximately 6–7pm — verify on the day.
• Scams: No notable transport scams at JMC. Standard caution: agree on taxi price before departure, use Uber or InDriver when possible for transparent pricing.
